Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick.
